With our help, research ideas or technological concepts are transformed into concrete startup ideas.
Startups receive targeted support on key topics such as business models, team building, and product development.
The incubator connects startups with relevant partners and provides access to technological infrastructure and testing facilities.
Teams with a compelling concept can be nominated to participate in the StartUpConnect program.
Through targeted preparation, teams are guided in presenting their idea effectively for the funding application.

Common questions
StartUpConnect is a support program run by the BMFTR for innovative startups in the field of future communication systems, such as 6G. It supports research, development, and business creation.
The program strengthens technological innovation, accelerates the transfer of research to the market, and promotes digital sovereignty and competitiveness in Germany and Europe.
We provide support throughout the process – from conceptualization and proposal submission to project implementation. In addition, we offer coaching, access to our network, infrastructure, and connections to industry partners.
Funding is provided for the research, development, and evaluation of demonstrators, incorporating specific application scenarios.
Topics: Campus networks, integrated communication and sensor technology for 6G systems, network management, transceiver systems, subcomponents, and complete solutions for fiber-optic systems.
Additional topics may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Researchers interested in starting a business, startup teams, startups, and young companies with innovative technologies in the field of future communication systems, with a focus on 6G.
Note: Concurrent participation in StartUpSecure is not permitted.
In exceptional cases, collaborative projects are possible. For collaborative projects, project proposals must be submitted in consultation with the designated project coordinator.
Important: At the time of disbursement, there must be a registered headquarters, a branch office, or an affiliation with a research institution in Germany.
The commercialization of the results is limited to Germany, the EEA, and Switzerland.
The amount depends on the project phase, scope, and partner structure.
Funding is provided in the form of a non-repayable grant for research and development.
The grant amount can be up to 800,000 EUR in each of the two phases.
You can join the program in two separate phases:
Phase 1: Development phase; up to 12 months
Phase 2: Implementation phase; 12 to 24 months
Proof of Technical Viability (Proof of Principle)
The target audience consists of individuals interested in starting a business at universities and research institutions.
Pre-competitive research and development activities aimed at preparing for a rapid market launch.
The target group consists of startups that are no more than five years old.
The application process consists of two stages.
Start-ups first submit a project outline to the incubator. Following a positive evaluation by the technical advisory board and the project sponsor, the second stage of the process involves a request to submit a formal funding application to the project sponsor.
Project outlines may be submitted to the incubator at any time. The project management agency conducts its selection process on a quarterly basis.
The project outline should generally not exceed ten pages (including attachments).
Please contact us as early as possible before the application deadline so that we can advise and assist you in preparing the outline. We provide templates.
The following criteria will be evaluated: technical relevance, degree of innovation, market potential, technological relevance, team competence, implementation strategy, and financial viability.
